Tezpur situated on the northern bank of Brahmaputra was also called, Sonitpur in ancient days. It is an important tourist destination full of beautiful parks, temples and ancient monuments.
Agnigarh
This hillock on bank of river Brahmaputra is the site of legendary romance of princess Usha, the only daughter of king Bana and Anirudha,, grandson of lord Krishna. Agnigarh provides a panoramic view of the great Brahmaputra river and Tezpur. Agnigarh has a series of sculptures depicting mythology, giant mushrooms and a huge waterfall. Another locale of architectural elegance are the ruins of the door frame of Da-Parbatia Temple a few kms from the town of Tezpur . This carving has the characteristics of the early Gupta School of sculpture. Hazara Pukhuri a large tank in name of Harjar Varman in Tezpur was excavated in the early part of the 9th century.Tezpur is also famous for the Orang wildlife reserve, which sprawls between Darrang and Sonitpur .Orang is said to have similar landscape as that of the famed Kaziranga National Park with strategic location of marshes, streams and grasslands. This park is also recognized as significant reserve to conserve on-horned rhinos on the northern bank of River Brahmaputra.
